Meet at Vienna Airport by 10 am. Our 75th Treasures Tour celebration journeys to the heart of Slovakia for the colorful Detva Folk Festival with music, song, dance, crafts, foods and our traditional welcome from the fujara players. Festive welcome party and toasts! (1 night in Banska Bystrica (ZVOLEN), Central Slovakia)
Sun., July 8
Time for church and a stroll on Banska Bystrica's famed square or visit the interactive war museum. Drive through spectacular scenery and stop at a famed doll maker in a Liptov village. We'll catch our first glimpse of the snow-clad High Tatras and then a chair lift will wisk us high up to a Tatra peak on a magical ride. Time to hike or admire the views. Our celebration continues at a fascinating koliba, dinner shepherd's style over a blazing fire served with flaming Tatra Tea and incomparable cymbal music. (2 nights on the edge of the Slovak Paradise in (SPIS), Eastern Slovakia)
Mon., July 9
Everyone loves walled Levoca with its historic buildings, Master Paul’s statues and old legends. And we can’t miss Spis Castle, the largest Gothic ruin in Europe. Take a mini-hike to see a dozen kinds of butterflies and mountain flowers. Be pulled on the dance floor with vibrant Rusyns at a celebration of wedding customs – it’s so hard to say goodbye!
Tues., July 10
Experience a village Museum which shows the daily life of your ancestors. See Presov with its historic square, beautiful cathedrals and Orthodox Synagogue & museum of Jewish culture. Tour beautifully restored Kosice's old town with a local guide and marvel at St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral, the famed Singing Fountain and more. (1 night in Kosice (ABOV) in southeastern Slovakia)
Wed. July 11
Zemplin County’s famed sights include Michalovce’s castle museum, with a stop at the village workshop of a 3rd generation master potter Jan Parikrupa. Pick your plates off his wall featuring folk dancers against a dark background or typical folk scenes. Tour Humenne’s charming palace and sample the local ice cream. (2 nights in Bardejov, (SARIS), UNESCO Treasure Town in northeastern Slovakia)
Thurs., July 12
Bardejov, the Pearl of Saris, is Slovakia’s other walled town and a UNESCO Treasure. Tour the historic square and magnificent St. Egidius Church. Enjoy the unique icon museum. Find out why the statue atop town hall moons the mayor's office. Experience village life at the outdoor skansen museum and visit an onion-domed wooden village church with icons and stories galore.
Fri., July 13
Take a raft ride on the scenic Dunajec River in Pieniny National Park and step into Poland. Goral boat drivers tell stories and legends. Visit Red Cloister Museum and learn of “mad monk” Cyprian who cured the locals with herbs and tried to fly from the Tatra peaks with wings of wax. Tour the Zdiar museum and admire the Beliansky Tatry mountain peaks then be pampered by the owners at our cozy chalet hotel in Zdiar with a Goral feast and music. (1 night in Zdiar (SPIS) on the northern border with Poland)
Sat., July 14
Wander historic Kezmarok’s streets filled with crafts demonstrations and many treasures for sale at the largest International Crafts Festival in Europe - 180 exhibitors, folk dancing, local foods, a medieval parade and opportunity to tour the castle. We head west and follow the famed Vah River on a castle-studded ride. A stop to admire historic Trencin Castle and climb to the top or stroll the ancient square. Another celebration party in Krakovany with a folk group performing especially for us. (2 nights in Bratislava, Slovakia’s Capital, Southwestern Slovakia)
Sun., July 15
Time for church if desired. See Bratislava with a local guide to learn the history and legends; on to Bratislava Castle to take a look from the ramparts. Historic Devin Castle has Celtic roots and great views from the top. It’s fun to sample the unique black currant wine. A festive farewell dinner at our favorite quaint restaurant is a joyful ending to our 75th tour celebration!
