Aug. 15 - Mukachevo's fascinating morning market with mounds of paprika and saffron; hilltop Palanok Castle with art, history and folk exhibits, folk art shop in town, icon-filled 17th century monastery and off to a remote village and its charming wooden church. Overnight in Mukachevo Aug. 16 - Cross into Romania's remote Maramures region where time stands still; visit the outstanding Maramures Museum with its folk treasures; see tall-towered wooden churches and carved house gates. Feast on Romanian delicasies. Overnight in Maramures - 4 night stay Aug 17 - Enjoy a rural village market - everything is for sale from flowers to pigs; revel in Sapanta's Merry Cemetery (a UNESCO Treasure with the colorful grave markers displaying the deceased's work); marvelous folk crafts for sale by the makers; we'll be welcomed into village homes with their wildly decorated parlors - every inch of the walls covered with rugs and ceramics and even take a peek into a village still. Overnight in Maramures Aug. 18 - See grand Barsana Monastery; hoping for a village folk festival in the afternoon; visit a renowned rug maker; festive dinner with local entertainment. Marvel at a wooden church built in the 1400s with one of the most beautiful cemeteries ever; great photo opps of women spinning and weaving outside their homes and a small museum that demonstrates flax culture. Overnight in Maramures Aug. 20 - Travel through picturesque Transylvania to visit 2 UNESCO Treasures - walled Sigishoara, an ancient fortress with Dracula's birthplace; and Biertan, a fortified church; we'll enjoy a medieval feast! Overnight in Biertan - 1 night stay Aug. 21 - Explore Biertan's fortified church with its fabulous oriental rugs and door with 17 locks that still functions; on to Sibiu, European Cultural City 2007, with 3 medieval squares.
